Chicago Cubs stay alive, win World Series Game 5

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2dWyjbk

(CNN)Breathe, Chicago Cubs fans. The Cubs aren’t done just yet.

Kris Bryant hit his first World Series home run, part of a three-run fourth inning, and the Cubs came away with a 3-2 win in Game 5 at Wrigley Field on Sunday night.
Cubs starting pitcher Jon Lester allowed two runs and four hits in six innings, striking out five. Closer Aroldis Chapman recorded the final eight outs for the save.
The win keeps the Cubs’ World Series title hopes alive. They trail the Indians 3-2 in the best-of-seven series, which heads back to Cleveland. Game 6 is Tuesday at Progressive Field.
Sunday’s win also marked the first time the Cubs have won a World Series game at Wrigley Field since October 8,1945, which was Game 6 against the Detroit Tigers. The Cubs haven’t won a World Series since 1908.
The pressure isn’t just on the Cubs to end a long title drought. The Indians haven’t won a World Series since 1948. The 174 combined seasons between titles for the two clubs is the most in World Series history.
Lester, who took the loss in Game 1, came out firing in Game 5. He struck out the side in the first inning, and fans inside Wrigley roared approvingly.
His mistake came in the top of the second, when Jose Ramirez blasted a Lester fastball into the left-field seats for a solo home run for a 1-0 Indians lead.
    The crowd went silent.
    But it didn’t last.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Cubs rallied, rattling off four consecutive hits and bringing the crowd back to life.
Bryant launched a solo home run off Trevor Bauer to tie the game. Anthony Rizzo then doubled off the ivy. Ben Zobrist singled to right, advancing Rizzo to third. Addison Russell reached on an infield single to third, scoring Rizzo for the second run and sending Zobrist to second.
After Jason Heyward struck out, Javier Baez bunted for a base hit, loading the bases with one out. David Ross hit a sacrifice fly to left, bringing home Zobrist to make it 3-1.
Bauer went four innings, giving up three runs on six hits, striking out seven.
The Indians made it 3-2 in the top of the sixth when Francisco Lindor’s single drove in Rajai Davis.

‘American Horror Story’ to do ‘crossover’ season

    via WordPress http://ift.tt/2egbkpX

Los Angeles (CNN)If you think “American Horror Story” has done it all, think again.

Creator Ryan Murphy has announced he plans to combine two of the FX anthology series’ previous themes for an upcoming “crossover” season.
“It’s not going to be next season, but we’re going to do a season that’s a crossover between ‘Murder House’ and ‘Coven,’ which is very bizarre,” Murphy told the crowd at Entertainment Weekly’s PopFest Sunday.
The season will feature characters from both installments, he said.
Murphy said he’s started approaching actors to see if they’re available.
“American Horror Story: Murder House” was the first season of the franchise and starred Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott, and Taissa Farmiga as a family who moved into a home with a dark past.
The New Orleans-set “Coven” was the third season and centered on a coven of Salem witches. It starred Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Frances Conroy and Jessica Lange.
Farmiga, Lange, Paulson and Evan Peters were among the actors who appeared in both seasons, but Murphy did not clarify how such a conflict would be handled in the crossover season.
The tricky planning involved in the crossover season will prevent it from being the next installment of the “American Horror Story” franchise, Murphy said.
He has not announced the theme for Season 7 of “American Horror Story.”
The series is currently airing Season 6, the theme for which remained a secret until the first episode debuted in September.
Murphy is currently working on casting two upcoming seasons of Emmy-winningAmerican Crime Story” one about Hurricane Katrina and another about the murder of Gianni Versace.
The latter was announced earlier this month.
Murphy said he was motivated to take on the death of the famed designer because he was always “very moved and freaked out” by his killing.
Versace was shot to death on the steps of his Miami home in 1997 by serial killerAndrew Cunanan.
Murphy said the “manhunt season” will focus on how Versace’s killer got away with being undetected long enough tokill Versace.
“The tragedy of the Versace murder was that it should not have happened,” Murphy said. “[Cunanan] should have been caught by then, but he was not caught because he was targeting gay people and people didn’t care.”
The Versace season will film in April, while the Katrina installment will begin production in June.
“[It’s a] really tragic story and I’ve always said the thing that makes me cry the most is lost potential or lost possibility,” Murphy added. “And I think he was such an amazing force that was taken too soon, for reasons he shouldn’t have been. That is a true crime story in America, so we’re tackling it.”

Dead spaces: Architects rethink our relationship with the afterlife

      via WordPress http://ift.tt/2f5UKbD

(CNN)Crematoriums, morgues, funeral homes. These buildings, all of which are involved in rituals around death, often look as mournful as they sound.

Designed to be discreet, they are usually cold and depressing utilitarian concrete boxes, tucked far away from the land of the living.
But architects around the world have begun to embrace death, designing symbolic structures that exude beauty, peace and a sense of intrigue.
“Crematoriums and morgues, including modern architecture, have always been challenging topics for architects,” says German designer Nikolaus Hirsch, who recent helped design a museum for the dead.
“But architecture can build a bridge between the living and the dead and, to some extent, blur the boundaries.”
From a Museum of Immortality in Mexico to a poetic morgue in Spain, designers are on a mission to inject more life into architecture for the dead.

Trump touts waterboarding, stokes immigration fears in border state

        via WordPress http://ift.tt/2fa8G2X

Albuquerque, New Mexico (CNN)Donald Trump on Sunday warned his supporters in this border state that Hillary Clinton “wants to let people just pour in,” saying without evidence that hundreds of millions of people could enter the US under a Clinton presidency.

And speaking just nine days before Election Day, the Republican nominee also bemoaned criticism of waterboarding and appeared to once again call for bringing back the since-banned technique for use in the fight against ISIS.
“These savages are chopping off heads, drowning people. This is medieval times and then we can’t do waterboarding? ‘It’s far too tough,'” Trump said, mocking critics of the technique used by the CIA in interrogations of terror suspects under President George W. Bush’s post-9/11 administration.
Trump has previously called for reinstating waterboarding and “much worse” methods of torture if he becomes president.
“We have to be tough and we have to be smart. And we have to be in some cases pretty vicious I have to tell you,” he added.
The Republican nominee also issued a dire — and baseless — warning to Americans that a Clinton administration could usher a flood of hundreds of millions of people crossing into the US.
“You could have 650 million people pour in and we’d do nothing about it. Think of it. That’s what could happen. You triple the size of our country in one week. Once you lose control of your borders you just have no country folks, you have no country,” Trump said, speaking in this Democrat-leaning border state.
Trump also stoked fears about undocumented immigrant crime, warning that continued illegal immigration would result “in the loss of American lives,” even though undocumented immigrants do not commit crimes at a higher rate than legal US residents.
Trump’s stop here came a day before Trump stumps in Michigan, also a state likely to swing in Clinton’s favor, as the Republican nominee and his campaign are hoping to make late gains to help secure the 270 electoral votes Trump needs to secure the presidency. Trump’s stops in these blue-leaning states also helps bolster the campaign’s message that Trump’s candidacy is on the rise and that the campaign is going on the offensive the final slog to Election Day.

Don’t blame Comey for this mess

            via WordPress http://ift.tt/2er4QT0

(CNN)James Comey is not primarily responsible for the political mess caused by the recent discovery of more emails that may be relevant to the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server. These newly uncovered emails were not written, sent or received by Comey. He didn’t store them on his computer, and it wasn’t his fault that they were not reviewed many months ago during the initial investigation. In fact, Comey never even knew these emails existed until now.

            America's

Ultimately, I don’t think these emails will amount to anything significant. Even if there is classified information contained in these emails, I don’t expect it will be enough to bring criminal charges against Clinton or her longtime close aide, Huma Abedin. While I am much more troubled by the fact these emails were not voluntarily disclosed earlier, I doubt there is a strong case for obstruction of justice. But that doesn’t mean the FBI shouldn’t do its job and look into them. If the emails are as voluminous as we have been told, that is going to take some time. The review won’t, and shouldn’t, be complete before the election.
I think we need to take a step back and acknowledge that, if anyone is to blame for this mess, it is Hillary Clinton and her staff. Had she been as diligent about following the proper procedures as she was about protecting her personal privacy, then none of this would be an issue and she might be on her way to winning the presidency in a landslide.
Not only was her use of that private email server “extremely careless,” but her cooperation in the ensuing investigation also seems reluctant at best, obstructive at worst. Once Clinton became aware of the nature of this investigation, she should have done everything humanly possible to get any potentially relevant information produced to Comey and his team for a thorough review. That would include asking Abedin to check for emails at home.
Whatever Clinton’s reasons, she and her staff either did a poor job of looking for all their emails or they didn’t really look at all. Emails were not disclosed, some were even destroyed. And now, some additional potentially relevant emails were only uncovered due to a separate criminal investigation into Abedin’s estranged husband’s sexting activities.
Had the FBI had these emails earlier, they would have already been carefully reviewed and likely discarded as not being material to the investigation or not significant enough to change Comey’s decision not to recommend prosecution. There would be nothing new to see here, and no political crisis for the Clinton campaign.

            Conflicted

I was skeptical when I first heard that the final decision to bring criminal charges would be left to Comey. It’s not that I questioned his ability to make that decision, or that I thought he would try to cover anything up to help Hillary Clinton. I knew he would act impartially, guided by the law and the best interests of the country. But I also knew that having him make the final decision would put him in the center of a political controversy that would have been best avoided by the appointment of a special prosecutor.
James Comey is the director of the FBI. As head of the FBI, he is employed by the Justice Department. This is the same Justice Department that is run by Loretta Lynch, who previously decided to step aside and leave the final decision about prosecuting Clinton to Comey, her subordinate. There was no prosecutor tasked with reviewing the FBI’s work on this case and making the final decision about bringing criminal charges. Instead, it was all left up to Comey.
Comey works for Lynch, Lynch works for the President, and the President is an outspoken supporter of Hillary Clinton, the focus of the investigation. If there was ever a case that cried out for a special prosecutor, this would be it.
Of course, it hardly looks like Comey is favoring Clinton right now. Dredging up the email investigation so close to the election obviously helps Donald Trump’s flailing campaign and bolsters other Clinton critics. But this is a consequence of factors outside the control of James Comey.

Join us on Twitter and Facebook

For him to have sat on this information to avoid a potential political controversy would have been wrong. Yes, it is against department policy to comment on pending investigations, especially so close to an election. But this has never been an investigation conducted according to policy.
I think Jim Comey is doing his job, and doing it well. From everything I know it appears he is putting the best interests of his country above his own. It must have been obvious to him that his decision not to recommend criminal charges against Clinton would cause outrage among many Republicans. It must have also been obvious to him that his comments about Clinton being “extremely careless” would cause much heartburn among Democrats. But he did what he thought was right, regardless of the political consequences.
Jim Comey may not have a friend left in Washington after all this is over, but the rest of America owes him our thanks.

From Snickers to Pat Benatar: A rabbit convention in Oregon

            via WordPress http://ift.tt/2eLIdvq

(CNN)Last year, Katya Rezvaya went to a rabbit-breeders convention in Portland, Oregon. But unlike most there, she went with cameras in hand, not rabbits.

In fact, she doesn’t even have a rabbit. She has always liked them, though, and after watching a documentary called “Rabbit Fever,” she was amazed at how grand in scale the rabbit breeding community is.
The documentary showcases a national convention held by the American Rabbit Breeders Association, whose annual event brings together more than 20,000 rabbits as they compete for prizes.
Rezvaya wanted to learn about the kinds of people she saw in “Rabbit Fever,” and she thought she’d go to one of the conventions and make portraits of the people there.
“My impression was, ‘Oh my God, so many rabbits,’ ” Rezvaya recalled. “I don’t know what I was expecting when I was going there, because this idea was totally unpredictable.”

              Photographer

The convention was held in a big expo center, where Rezvaya set up a studio. She started by simply approaching people she was interested in photographing. But as the five-day event progressed, people heard about the woman making portraits, and they started to approach her.
“What was interesting for me is that, for this convention, I really felt that there were people from all over America,” Rezvaya said.
She was also amused by some of the names people gave their rabbits — names like Snickers, Captain Adorable and Pat Benatar.
One rabbit breed, Dwarf Hotots, look like they’re wearing black eyeliner because of the ring of black fur around their eyes. So Peyton Brackenbury, 12, named hers by eyeliner brands such as Maybelline and Unique.
There are many different rabbit breeds that vary in size, shape and color. Marcus Rhoden’s fluffy Felicia, in photo No. 10, is an English Angora.

              Social media

Follow @CNNPhotos on Twitter to join the conversation about photography.

“There was a section in the building with this breed,” Rezvaya said. “There were a lot of people … they were always busy with their rabbits because they always had to brush them or something.”
There were some really large rabbits, too. Daniel and Susan Hathaway’s furry friends Defiance and Enterprise — in the fourth photo above — each weigh about 16 pounds. They’re Flemish Giants, one of the largest rabbit breeds.
“Susan is a really, really small woman and the rabbit is about 7 kilograms (15.4 pounds). It’s huge,” Rezvaya said. “She had to bring the rabbit on a cart to my place because it was like a 10-minute walk from one side of the building to another.”
Although she has never had a rabbit, Rezvaya says if she were to get one, she would probably get a Dwarf Hotot like little Ozwald in photo No. 11. “They are really cute,” she said.
Rezvaya calls her photo series “Oh My Rabbits” and feels portraits were the best and most enjoyable way for her to find out more about the rabbit-breeding community. Her photographs capture just how diverse the community is.
“I can’t even say something particular about who rabbit breeders are,” she said.

Male birth control shot found effective, but side effects cut study short

              via WordPress http://ift.tt/2eZMegr

(CNN)Both men and women are responsible for pregnancy, yet the burden of preventing it often falls on one gender. Women can choose from a variety of options to control fertility while for generations, men have been limited to withdrawal, condoms and sterilization. But someday soon, a new method may allow men to shoulder a greater share of responsibility.

A new hormonal birth control shot for men effectively prevented pregnancy in female partners, a new study found.
The study, co-sponsored by the United Nations and published Thursday in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, tested the safety and effectiveness of a contraceptive shot in 320 healthy men in monogamous relationships with female partners. Conducted at health centers around the world, enrollment began on a rolling basis in September 2008. The men, who ranged in age from 18 to 45, underwent testing to ensure that they had a normal sperm count at the start.

                Don't

After the shots stopped, most of the men returned to fertility during a recovery period.
“The minimum recovery time was about 12 weeks after the last injection, and the average time was about 26 weeks,” said Colvard.
Still, there were problems. After 52 weeks in recovery, eight participants had not returned to fertility. The researchers continued to follow these men individually, and five eventually regained normal sperm counts over a longer period of time. One volunteer did not fully recover within four years, though he did “partially recover, so whether he is actually fertile is not known,” Colvard said.
“It shows that it’s a risk, a low-probability risk of it, and it’s not to be sneezed at as a risk of it, surely,” Lloyd said, adding that this risk needs to be compared with those involved in hormonal birth control for women, such as potentially fatal strokes and blood clots.
“These risks of fertility damage are not fatal risks like the women endure with their birth control,” said Lloyd. “You have to compare what women are doing in terms of taking hormones with what men are doing in terms of taking hormones. Are they taking their life in their hands when they take the hormones? Women are. And that needs to be put right up in front when considering the risk.”
Colvard and his co-authors say more research is needed as they work to perfect their cocktail of hormonal contraceptives in an attempt to reduce the risk of side effects, including depression, increased sex drive and acne.
Despite the side effects of the male birth control shot, more than 75% of participants reported being willing to use this method of contraception at the conclusion of the study.
Cohen believes at least part of the reason for this is that they were getting testosterone.

                Looking to the future

“Testosterone makes men feel pretty good,” Cohen said. “Testosterone is not a stimulant per se, but it is a steroid, and like a lot of steroids, it can give you a boost of energy. It can give you a boost of muscle mass. It can help with weight loss. It can help with mentation,” or mental activity.
Lloyd believes that if 75% of the men said they’d be interested in getting the shot if it were available, there’s real interest in the product. “That’s unbelievable. That’s fabulous. I’m very very impressed with that number,” she said.
Cohen, who says he he sees patients who face infertility or other hormonal problems, worries about the safety of this method. “Let’s just say, when I read it, I was highly alarmed,” he said, explaining that putting men on testosterone who have normal testosterone levels is not safe and amounts to a violation of the “ethical clinical practice guidelines.”
However, Lloyd thinks this product is a long time coming.
“It’s been a long time since people have been talking about male birth control. This goes back to the 1950s at least.” When scientists first began talking about hormonal birth control for women, they also discussed the same for men, explained Lloyd, but hormonal contraceptives for men were not acted on or investigated.

See the latest news and share your comments with CNN Health on Facebook and Twitter.

Cohen questions the general safety of hormonal birth control — for anyone.
“We’re talking about young people, and the scary thing is messing around with young people’s hormones, and that can be detrimental for the rest of their life, right?” Cohen said. “You take an 18-year-old girl or a 20-year-old boy and mess around with their hormones, you’ve really altered possibly how they go through their life.
“If anything, this may wake us up to finding out better hormonal contraceptives for women, right? Because certainly, I know that a lot of young women don’t get the type of counseling that maybe they deserve when it comes to contraception,” Cohen said. “Just a (prescription) and a visit to Duane Reade is all they get, and that may not be enough.”
