Malia Obama moved into Harvard dorms during the eclipse with the help of her crafty parents

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2x3y3PX

At this point, pretty much only the sun can outshine the Obamas, and they’ve figured out a brilliant way to use that to their advantage.

The former POTUS and FLOTUS moved their eldest daughter Malia into her Harvard University dorm while the sun and the moon were doing their very special dance on Monday.

Malia, who took a gap year last year and worked for The Weinstein Company, is an incoming freshman at the university. She got some help from her famous parents moving into her new digs.

They’ve done their best to protect their girls’ privacy over the years, so we can only assume they hoped all eyes would be in the sky instead of on them. But despite the distraction of the eclipse, people still gawked as the family was out and about in Cambridge, Massachusetts, being, well, a family.

“Saw Obama in Harvard during peak solar eclipse, I’m in a weird dream right now,” Facebook user Jason Corey wrote, along with footage of the super casual former president greeting folks with a wave.

Despite the fact that she most likely wants to be treated as a totally normal freshman who just happens to have lived in the White House, people’s chill levels were (understandably) out of wack upon spotting Malia on campus,

No word yet on whether or not other Harvard freshman and black-ish star Yara Shahidi (whose college recommendation letter came from Michelle Obama herself and Malia have drafted a plan to conquer the world, but we’ll keep you posted.

An actor’s response to ‘whitewashing’ backlash shows the rest of Hollywood how it’s done.

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2x2MFPC

On Aug. 21, actor Ed Skrein announced that he had accepted a role in the upcoming “Hellboy” reboot. A week later, he dropped out — for a very good reason.

Skrein had been cast as Ben Daimio, an employee of the fictional Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. Best known for his role as Ajax in 2016’s “Deadpool,” Skrein seems like he’d be a great fit for what will likely be a high-energy, action-packed “Hellboy.”

There was just one problem: The character, Daimio, is Japanese-American. Skrein is not. And Daimio’s heritage plays a pretty huge role in his story.

Pink takes home the coveted MTV Video Vanguard Award and shares a powerful story about her daughter

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2vD4Ho0

Raise your glasses—Pink has taken home the coveted Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award at the 2017 MTV VMA awards.

While on stage at this year’s ceremony, everyone’s favorite empowering 37-year-old singer performed a medley of hits spanning her career. She went home with what is basically the lifetime achievement award for the network, and imparted some inspiring words for the audience and fans watching at home.

Ellen Degeneres presented the award to Pink, after a last minute request from the singer herself who asked Degeneres to replace Cher, who was unable to make the ceremony for unknown reasons.

“If I may tell you a quick story,” Pink began her acceptance speech, going into a story about how her daughter grappled with self-esteem.

“‘Momma, I’m the ugliest girl I know,'” Pink said her daughter exclaimed one day. “I said, huh? She was like, ‘I look like a boy with long hair.’ My brain went to, oh my God you’re six, where is this coming from?” Pink said.

“I didn’t say anything. Instead I went home and made a PowerPoint presentation for her. In that presentation were androgynous rockstars and artists that live their truth and are probably made fun of everyday of their life and carry on and wave their flag and inspire the rest of us,” Pink continued, naming musicians like Annie Lennox, Prince, George Michael, Elton John, and Michael Jackson.

Pink ended her stirring story with a poignant statement. “We don’t change—we take the gravel in the shell and make a pearl,” she said. “We help other people to change to see more kinds of beauty. Thank you for being your true selves and lighting the way for us,” she continued, acknowledging the other artists at the award show.

“You my darling girl are beautiful and I love you,” she said to her daughter, who was in the crowd.

The award, which recognizes revolutionary artists and their music videos throughout the years, has gone to everyone from David Bowie to BeyoncĂ© in previous years.

Leave it to Pink to never fail at getting the party started and making you cry just a little bit, even after 17 years in the game.

Here’s Tim Cook’s note to Apple employees denouncing neo-Nazis in Charlottesville

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2vvfwbB

Image: NICHOLAS KAMM/AFP/GETTY

Apple CEO Tim Cook has no time for white supremacists and neo-Nazis.

He made it pretty clear in a powerful note to Apple employees, which also slams Trump’s “moral equivalence” between Nazis and human rights demonstrators.

In the email, obtained by Recode, Cook also announced the company would make contributions of $1 million each to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and the Anti-Defamation League.

Apple plans to match its employees’ donations to these and other human rights groups on a 2-for-1 basis, until September 30. Moreover, in the coming days iTunes will offer users an easy way to join the company in directly supporting the work of the SPLC.

“I disagree with the president and others who believe that there is a moral equivalence between white supremacists and Nazis, and those who oppose them by standing up for human rights,” Cook wrote. “Equating the two runs counter to our ideals as Americans.”

Cook’s blistering attack on Trump comes after as business leaders such as the heads of 3M, Campbell Soup, Johnson & Johnson, and United Technologies announced their resignations from advisory councils on Wednesday in protest against the president’s comments about the violence in Charlottesville.

As a consequence, the president said he is scrapping two business councils, the Manufacturing Council & Strategy & Policy Forum.

More recently, Apple has warred with Trump in debates over immigration and climate change. Behind the scenes, however, Cook has labored to shape the Trump administrations policies on issues from tax reform to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, sources previously told Recode. Cook has sounded off not only with the president individually but also his top advisors, like son-in-law Jared Kushner and his wife, Ivanka.

Heres Cooks full note:

Team,

Like so many of you, equality is at the core of my beliefs and values. The events of the past several days have been deeply troubling for me, and Ive heard from many people at Apple who are saddened, outraged or confused.

What occurred in Charlottesville has no place in our country. Hate is a cancer, and left unchecked it destroys everything in its path. Its scars last generations. History has taught us this time and time again, both in the United States and countries around the world.

We must not witness or permit such hate and bigotry in our country, and we must be unequivocal about it. This is not about the left or the right, conservative or liberal. It is about human decency and morality. I disagree with the president and others who believe that there is a moral equivalence between white supremacists and Nazis, and those who oppose them by standing up for human rights. Equating the two runs counter to our ideals as Americans.

Regardless of your political views, we must all stand together on this one point that we are all equal. As a company, through our actions, our products and our voice, we will always work to ensure that everyone is treated equally and with respect.

I believe Apple has led by example, and were going to keep doing that. We have always welcomed people from every walk of life to our stores around the world and showed them that Apple is inclusive of everyone. We empower people to share their views and express themselves through our products.

In the wake of the tragic and repulsive events in Charlottesville, we are stepping up to help organizations who work to rid our country of hate. Apple will be making contributions of $1 million each to the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League. We will also match two-for-one our employees donations to these and several other human rights groups, between now and September 30.

In the coming days, iTunes will offer users an easy way to join us in directly supporting the work of the SPLC.

Dr. Martin Luther King said, Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter. So, we will continue to speak up. These have been dark days, but I remain as optimistic as ever that the future is bright. Apple can and will play an important role in bringing about positive change.

Best,

Tim

Singapore Airlines goes all Instagram-pretty in its latest inflight safety video

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2vhsA8r

If you never pay attention during inflight safety videos, perhaps Singapore Airlines’ latest will change that.

The new video, which will start showing in flights at the end of the year, showcases plenty of iconic landmarks in the photogenic city, as a voiceover narrates the usual safety guidelines.

It does take a bit of a suspended imagination to see how they’ve appropriated landmarks around Singapore for the safety demonstration, though. For example, they used park benches at the Henderson Waves to demonstrate how to brace for impact, and movie seats at the Capitol Theatre, to explain putting away your USB charging cable when taking off.

Still, you can’t deny that it’s one of the most beautiful safety videos around. Guess you can expect lots more tourists at these spots after the screener becomes permanent.

This weatherman’s reaction to the solar eclipse is the sweetest thing you’ll see all day

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2xBNAnm

Monday’s total solar eclipse was akin to a meteorologist’s Super Bowl a fact that was certainly not lost on one Chicago weatherman.

Tom Skilling, chief meteorologist for WGN-TV, travelled to Carbondale, Ill. to view the solar eclipse in its path of totality, (his first solar eclipse, btw) and his reaction was truly precious.

Behold:

“I’ll get my act together guys,” a choked up Skilling told viewers through tears.

He even hugged and high-fived fellow eclipse watchers, and led a chorus of “Here Comes the Sun.”

If that doesn’t melt your ice cold heart, honestly nothing will.

Twitter loved the meteorologist’s pure reaction so much, he was even trending Monday.

Skilling told fellow Carbondale eclipse watchers he would be back for the next one in 2024. Here’s hoping Skilling’s reaction will be equally as priceless.

Judge Judy decides a case in seconds after an excited dog recognizes its owner

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2wPSBLX

The love and loyalty between a pet and its owner is like no other, and thankfully, Judge Judy knows it.

On a super emotional episode of Judge Judy a dog owner fought to get his lost dog back from a woman who claimed that she bought the dog legally from someone on the street, implying the dog is rightfully hers.

After Judge Judy ordered the dog to be brought into the courtroom and placed on the floor, it became obvious who the dog’s real owner was. The tearful reunion between the pup and the man was all Judge Judy needed to rule that these two be together once again. She couldn’t ignore the happy little jumps of the doggie when he saw his owner. Even the woman who allegedly bought the dog knew it, too she knew that once the dog was put before his rightful owner, it would be a done deal.

We’re so happy these two are back together again. We love to see people, and pups, this happy.

Google Maps puts Outback Steakhouse in the center of a bizarre conspiracy theory

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2w2DqOC

Image: mike mozart / flickr

The internet has way too much time on its hands.

Twitter user @eatmyaesthetics rehashed truly bizarre findings concerning a bunch of Outback Steakhouse locations, which has placed the restaurant chain at the center of an internet conspiracy theory.

Eatmyaesthetics started by looking at a number of Outback locations in various cities. What would appear to some as a well-spaced series of locations, looked to our erstwhile Twitter user like a signal from a satanic cult to others.

Drawing lines between the locations revealed a pentagram, a symbol which has been used by many cultures in the past, including Wiccans and the Freemasons. While there are discrepancies on the true meaning of the symbol, many associate the five-pointed star with Satan, the Illuminati, evil, and witchcraft.

And because the internet LOVES a good conspiracy theory, a bunch of people hopped into the thread to give some more examples, and add to the sarcastic hysteria.

The conspiracy got so much attention that the Outback twitter account took note, and responded to say the outline is simply a Bloomin’ Onion, one of the restaurant’s popular appetizers. (For those unaware, the Bloomin’ Onion is a deep-fried onion, and it’s simply incredible.)

No one believed them.

Before this turns into Pizzagate, we would like to remind our readers that this is very much a meme and nobody in their right mind actually believes Outback Steakhouse is the center of a cult conspiracy.

And to be fair, this is a somewhat old theory, going back years. It appears as if eatmyaesthetics just rehashed an old internet meme.

Trump-like inflatable chicken pops up near White House

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2vk8hmJ

A giant inflatable chicken with golden locks is back at the White House.

Back in April the so-called “Trump chicken” became a mascot during the Tax March. Now the inflatable poultry with a Trump-like hairdo is back, popping up Wednesday in the Ellipse park just behind the White House.

Many noticed something was different and pointed out the golden-haired chicken Wednesday.

One news station even had a Facebook Live of the chicken shot.

This man claimed responsibility for todays chicken display. He told HuffPost that Trump is too chicken to release his tax returns and stand up to Russian president Vladimir Putin. He reportedly spent $1,300 on his visual protest.

Inflatable chickens are available on eBay for $500. They look almost identical to the Trump rooster statue that popped up in China last year. The chicken spotted at the White House Wednesday seems to make appearances every so often.

Too bad Trump is still in Bedminster, New Jersey, missing out on all the D.C. fun.

$1 million from Bruno Mars concert donated to Flint water crisis

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2xfXXxL

Singer Bruno Mars announced at a concert in Auburn Hills, Michigan that he donated $1 million to aid the Flint water crisis.

“Tonight I want to donate 1 million dollars, to our brothers and sisters in Flint, Michigan,” Mars announced to the crowd, which immediately erupted in approval. Mars, along with show promoter Live Nation, donated proceeds from the sold out show to the Community Foundation of Greater Flint.

The foundation gives immediate and ongoing support to the community of of Flint, Michigan, which continues to suffer from toxic water supplies that were tainted when the city switched its water system to the polluted Flint River in 2014.

“I’m very thankful to the Michigan audience for joining me in supporting this cause,” Mars said in a statement. “Ongoing challenges remain years later for Flint residents, and it’s important that we don’t forget our brothers and sisters affected by this disaster. As people, especially as Americans, we need to stand together to make sure something like this never happens in any community ever again.”

“With a grateful heart, the Community Foundation of Greater Flint is honored to accept this inspiring donation,” CFGF president and CEO Isaiah M. Oliver said in a statement. “We know Bruno Mars’ $1 million gift will be transformative to the children and families of Flint. He understands the issues faced by Flint citizens, and we are touched by his concern and generosity.”

Typical New Yorkers are totally unfazed by man carrying a peacock on the subway

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2xvAsA4

New York City residents are used to seeing strange things on the subway dogs in suitcases, impromptu graduation ceremonies, people vacuuming and eating off of subway platforms, you name it.

So, honestly, a guy carrying a full-grown peacock onto the train doesn’t really shock anyone, but it’s still pretty cool.

The people around this peacock chillin’ in the train absolutely couldn’t care less about the giant bird hovering above them. This is what NYC is all about.

The MTA Peacock Guy, as he calls himself, is Reddit user BarFreddys, did a bit of a victory lap when the picture caught steam around the internet. He explained a little behind the bird in a comment, and sadly revealed that the peakcock is stuffed.

Haha, no it’s the mascot of a bar I run in Tribeca called Weather Up,” he wrote. “The owner Kathryn is the blonde woman to right of me, she’s the owner of the peacock. It’s also stuffed, come to the bar for a beer.

To prove his identity and to give us another shot of the dead, commuting bird, BarFreddys also posted a photo of him and his pal cracking open a cold one after their big NYC adventure.

That is one giant peacock.

New York City Transit’s Twitter account tried to put an end to this fun by contacting the original uploader for information regarding MTA Peacock Guy, but his fellow New Yorkers didn’t stand for it. Let the peacock guy live!

And it’s true between the scorching heat and the MTA’s “Summer of Hell,” public transportation in NYC hasn’t exactly been pleasant. So let everyone have a little fun!

After all, like we said, this isn’t the strangest thing that’s happened in the subway, and everyone knows it.

Another day, another bird on the subway.

Double rainbow over the White House would be nice if it werent such a dump

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2wHjJfK

President Donald Trump left Washington to speak at a rally in West Virginia on Friday and a double freakin’ rainbow was spotted over the White House.

Coincidence?

Considering Trump recently called the residence a “dump,” in addition to the news that Robert Mueller will impanelled a Grand Jury in Washington for the Russia probe, the rainbow was ripe for metaphors.

Even Sean Spicer took a brief moment from hiding in the bushes to relax and take a photo of the rainbows with Trump out of town.

Trump leaves for a 17 day vacation on Friday, despite bashing President Obama for taking holiday during his presidency.

Man hacks his Amazon Alexa to talk out of a skull and it’s super creepy

Trump can learn an important lesson from Mr. Rogers

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2vMLOQk

If you were a child in America anytime between the ’60s and ’90s, there’s a certain man in a red sweater who was probably there for you.

Fred Rogers, better known as the one and only Mr. Rogers, spent over four decades hosting educational TV programs for kids. In 1969, the same year PBS was founded, he appeared before the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee and gave a moving speech on what publicly funded TV programs could offer.

Of course, all this talk about public TV feels more important than ever, given the Trump Administration’s plans to eliminate the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (which funds PBS, where Sesame Street still airs, despite the show being sold to HBO) as well as three other independent agencies for culture and the arts.

In Mr. Roger’s speech from the late 1960s, he touches on the importance of his own programs, which deal with the “inner dramas” of childhood in a way that can’t be done with privately funded cartoons airing elsewhere, he said.

“We don’t need to bop someone over the head to make drama on the screen,” he told the committee. “We deal with such things as getting a haircut or the feelings about brothers and sisters or the kind of anger that arises in simple family situations. And we speak to it constructively.”

The beloved TV host seems ahead of his time, explaining exactly why the physical health of children isn’t the only thing to be worried about.

“I feel that if we, in public television, can only make it clear that feelings are mentionable and manageable,” he said. “We will have done a great service for mental health.”

The song he later recites will literally melt your heart. We still miss you, Mr. Rogers.

Trump finally comments on white nationalist rally, violence in Charottesville

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2uSWXNB

Image: AP/REX/Shutterstock

After hours of silence, President Donald Trump finally commented on the white nationalist rally and related violence happening in Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday.

“We ALL must be united & condemn all that hate stands for,” the president tweeted. “There is no place for this kind of violence in America. Lets come together as one!”

He added a second tweet soon after:

Trump tweeted after 1 p.m. on Saturday, almost two hours after Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency in Charlottesville and the city determined the scheduled Unite the Right rally protesting the removal of Confederate monuments to be a form of unlawful assembly.

His tweet took a long time, and it came after Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and even First Lady Melania Trump had already commented.

Their commentary made the president’s earlier silence particularly noticeable. And plenty of other people had their own reactions as well.

The White House has no official connection to the rally planned in Charlottesville, but many of the marchers were Trump supporters who praised the president while they waved Nazi and Confederate flags. One Twitter user captured video of marchers yelling, “Heil Trump.”

Some of the violence in Virginia was between the white nationalist protesters and counter-protesters perhaps why Trump’s comment focusing on us all “[coming] together as one.”

As J.K. Rowling said, hell of a day to forget how to tweet.

Many Detroit Red Wings fans were confused to see their favorite team’s logo waving among swastikas, confederate flags, and other symbols of hate at a massive white supremacist gathering in Virginia on Saturday.

One widely shared video shows a group of racists carrying homemade shields marked with the team’s insignia and chanting the Nazi slogan “blood and soil” as they poured into Charlottesville.

Lest you think that the Detroit hockey team has become a hate group, its front office said in a statement on Saturday that it “vehemently disagrees” with the Nazis who’ve repurposed its trademarks. The team said it’s “exploring every possible legal action.”

The NHL also said it was “outraged” too.

The logo probably owes its appearance at the rally to a similarly named white nationalist group, called the Detroit Right Wings, though that hasn’t been confirmed. The so-called “identitarians” do have a defunct YouTube channel and a now-suspended Twitter account that use the logo, and the slogan “Rust Reforged.”

A state of emergency has been called in the city after the white supremacists violently clashed with counter-protesters, and at least one death has been confirmed.

New ad claims Airbnb is good for terrorists

The hotel industry is holding nothing back in its war against Airbnb.

The Hotel Association of New York City has released an advertisement that ties Airbnb to terrorism, using the recent Manchester bombing to associate the rental business with ways for terrorists to find housing.

Airbnb did not harbor any of the suspects around the bombing, though the company had initially been connected to an apartment that had been raided by police. That apartment turned out not to be an Airbnb, but rather a private room booked through another company.

Still, the ad uses the Manchester bombing to point the finger at Airbnb’s refusal to hand over addresses of listings to law enforcement.

“So who’s in your building? Airbnb won’t say,” the ad shows in its final frame.

The ad, first noticed by the New York Daily News, will reportedly be pushed with a half-million-dollar campaign for ten days in the New York City area.

Airbnb didn’t mince words in pushing back against the ad. Airbnb public policy director Josh Meltzer sent a letter to a group of CEOs of hotels that are a part of the NYC association, as seen by the New York Business Journal.

“First and foremost, Airbnb had nothing to do with this tragedy, and using these attacks in a cynical corporate PR campaign is despicable. Your company and the front groups you fund may oppose Airbnb and middle class people who share their homes, but using a global terrorist attack to protect your bottom line is beyond the pale and should have no place in any civil discourse,” Meltzer wrote.

Airbnb poses a serious threat to the hotel industry, which for decades operated without serious external competition. Now, with Airbnb worth almost twice as much as some of the biggest hotel chains in the world, the hotel industry has ramped up its efforts to force its new rival to abide by local laws … and change customer perception of home-sharing in the process.

U.S. Army just kicked Chinese drone company DJI out of all official operations

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2hAkDoI

The U.S. army just kicked one of the biggest drone makers on the planet out of its barracks, all in the name of security.

The maker of the drones in question: China’s DJI (also known as SZ DJI Technology Co Ltd.).

An Aug. 2 U.S. Army memo obtained by sUAS News and later verified by Reuters advises that all service members “cease all use, uninstall all DJI applications, remove all batteries/storage media and secure equipment for follow-on direction.”

Later, the memo gets more specific, stating, “Due to increased awareness of cyber vulnerabilities associated with DJI product, it is directed that the U.S. Army halt use of all DJI products.” The advisory covers all DJI-associated hardware and software.

“We are surprised and disappointed to read reports of the U.S. Armys unprompted restriction on DJI drones.”

“We are surprised and disappointed to read reports of the U.S. Armys unprompted restriction on DJI drones as we were not consulted during their decision,” a DJI spokesperson told sUAS News. “Well be reaching out to the U.S. Army to confirm the memo and to understand what is specifically meant by ‘cyber vulnerabilities.'”

Last year, DJI addressed concerns from some regarding security, specifically as it relates to its relationship with the Chinese government.

“Some recent news stories have claimed DJI routinely shares customer information and drone video with authorities in China, where DJI is headquartered. This is false,” read the strongly worded April 2016 statement.

“We want to emphasize that DJI does not routinely share customer information or drone video with Chinese authorities or any authorities. DJI posts our extensive privacy policy online at www.dji.com/policy to be transparent about what information we collect and how we use it.”

However, in a section on the DJI website regarding its privacy policies, the company states:

We may preserve and disclose your information if required to do so by law or in the good-faith belief that such action is necessary to comply with applicable laws, in response to a court order, judicial or other government subpoena, warrant or request, or to otherwise cooperate with law enforcement or other governmental agencies.

So aside from the undefined cyber security concerns mentioned by the U.S. Army, DJI’s privacy statement could conceivably present security issues when it comes to missions involving the U.S. and Chinese governments.

But the larger concern for DJI is likely related to its business. The Army’s move is a major negative signal for DJI drone use and may influence a number of non-military operations who may follow the Army’s lead, the logic being: if it’s not secure enough for the military, maybe it’s not secure enough for our corporate or private needs.

Martin Shkreli (a.k.a. Pharma Bro) found guilty of securities fraud

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2hxpirl

The PharmaBro is now the PharmaCon.

Martin Shkreli was found guilty of two counts of securities fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud on Friday. He was found not guilty on five other related counts.

Shkreli faces 20 years in prison, though he’ll likely be sentenced to a shorter stint. The date of the sentencing has not yet been set.

Shkreli stood trial for eight total counts of securities and wire fraud stemming from his time running Retrophin, a pharmaceutical company he founded. He was accused of repeatedly lying to investors, then, scheming to pay them back using fake agreements for things like consulting services.

One particular quirk of the case, however, is the fact that investors in the case all made money from their relationship with Shkreli, which the defense argued invalidated any claims of fraud.

Shkreli became the subject of national criticism after a pharmaceutical company he ran bought up the rights to a drug commonly used by AIDS patients and hiked the price by more than 5000 percent.

Since then, Shkreli has become something of a poster child for pharmaceutical prices run amok. Shkreli relished the spotlight, though, often trolling people on social media and appearing in marathon livestreams from his apartment.

He also spent $2 million on a sought-after Wu Tang Clan album, of which only one copy exists.

In response to the verdict, Shkreli channeled President Donald Trump, but also appeared to accept the judgement.

“This was a witch hunt of epic proportions, and maybe they found one or two broomsticks. But at the end of the day we’ve been acquitted of the most important charges of this case, and I’m delighted to report that,” Shkreli said.

6 jaw-dropping quotes from the bombshell Fox News lawsuit

Lawsuits continue to rain on Fox News.

On Tuesday, NPR broke the news that longtime contributor Rod Wheeler is suing the network over allegations that Fox News misattributed quotes to him to further a made-up story involving the murder of a Democratic National Committee employee, and that the network did so at President Donald Trump’s behest.

The claim is, shall we say, explosive. We’ve extracted the six most shocking quotes from the lawsuit, below.

‘A couple minutes ago I got a note that we have the full, uh, attention of the White House, on this. And, tomorrow, lets close this deal, whatever weve got to do. But you can feel free to say that the White House is onto this now.’

Wheeler’s lawsuit alleges that the above note is a text message he got from Ed Butowsky a GOP surrogate and fellow Fox News contributor in the days before Fox News producer Malia Zimmerman published a story about the made-up murder conspiracy.

The story alleged that DNC staffer Seth Rich had made contact with Wikileaks via email in the days before he was killed, and Wheeler, a former police investigator who was digging into the crime on behalf of Rich’s family, was to be the point man pushing this narrative on TV after publication.

Wheeler initially became involved when Butowsky, an investor by trade, paid him $5,000 in March to investigate Rich’s murder. At the time, the Riches, who didn’t know Butowsky beforehand, welcomed what they thought was help. Instead, what they got was even more pain.

“‘Not to add any more pressure but the president just read the article. He wants the article out immediately. It’s now all up to you. But don’t feel the pressure'”

This is another text message allegedly from Butowsky, who facilitated the story, to Wheeler. Butowsky alleges that Trump reviewed Zimmerman’s article and wanted it on the internet as soon as possible.

“Mr. Wheeler who was the only named source quoted in the article did not make these statements. According to Butowsky, the statements were falsely attributed to Mr. Wheeler because that is the way the President wanted the article.”

There are two things to unpack here.

First, Zimmerman quoted Wheeler in the now-retracted Fox News story about Rich’s made-up contact with Wikileaks. But Wheeler says the quotes are fake. Both quotes begin with the words “my investigation,” and one says “there was some degree of email exchange between Seth Rich and WikiLeaks.” The quotes make it seem as though Wheeler is the driving force behind the Wikileaks framing.

Second, this alleges that Zimmerman or another person involved made up Wheeler’s quotes at Trump’s request.

“Butowsky and Zimmerman hoped that, if they could confirm that Seth Rich leaked the DNC emails to WikiLeaks, that would debunk reports the Russians were responsible for the DNC hacks.”

This allegation in the lawsuit claims that Butowsky and Zimmerman wanted to make up a story about Rich to deflect attention from the many stories about the relationship between Trump’s campaign/administration and the Russian government.

“…in the weeks and months leading up to the publication of Zimmermans May 16, 2017 article, Butowsky kept in regular contact with Trump Administration officials including Mr. Spicer …”

Then-White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer was asked about the article on the day it published, but didn’t mention any meetings with Butowsky and Wheeler, nor did he admit knowledge of how the article came to be published.

But the lawsuit alleges that Butowsky and Wheeler met with Spicer a month before publication. It also alleges that Butowsky was in contact with White House adviser of Breitbart infamy Stephen Bannon and Sarah Flores, the director of the Department of Justice’s Office of Public Affairs.

In an emailed statement, Flores wrote, “I have not communicated with Mr. Butowsky at any point this year.”

“Im actually the one whos been putting this together but as you know I keep my name out of things because I have no credibility.”

Butowsky sent an email to several people at Fox News the night before the story came out, instructing them on how to talk about it, and admitting he has “no credibility.”

The angle he wanted, according to the lawsuit, was: “Russians didn’t hack into the DNC and steal the emails and impact our election.”

Wheeler, who is black, is also suing the network for racial discrimination. The lawsuit alleges that “white colleagues with comparable or inferior skills, expertise and experience have received more air time, made more appearances and been hired into full time positions. As a result, these white colleagues make more money, receive more notoriety and, in many cases, receive valuable benefits.”

Wheeler’s discrimination lawsuit is nothing new for Fox News, which is already facing allegations of racial discrimination by former and current employees who filed lawsuits earlier this year.
