Tesla’s Model 3 uses a phone instead of a key

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2vd0Y37

Image: tesla

This might take a little getting used to.

After months and months of anticipation, Elon Musk has finally answered almost all of our questions about the Model 3. But there’s one aspect of the electric car that might take a little more adjustment: there is no key for the Model 3.

To be clear, this is not the same as the “keyless” systems, which require some kind of key fob, and it’s not the app-enabled remote starting some automakers offer. No, the Model 3 doesn’t require any kind of “key” or physical object other than your smartphone.

Tesla’s system uses the unique bluetooth signal from your phone to unlock the car when you get near it and start it when you get inside, according to Cnet.

Of course, smartphones die and sometimes you need to valet so, naturally, that’s not the only way to unlock and start the Model 3. There’s also an NFC-equipped card that lets you unlock and start the car by tapping it on the outside of the door, and then once again inside to start it up.

And that’s it. No keys to lose. And, unlike costly key fobs, a plastic card is likely a lot cheaper to replace.

Tesla is not the first car maker to experiment with this idea. Volvo has been testing key-free cars since 2016, but Tesla is the first company to make it a standard feature on one of its cars.

All the best things on the internet are terrible at making money

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2viMgIC

Image: Shutterstock / Andrey_Popov

At some point, the internet became a get-rich-quick scheme.

There’s a simple formula to it: Smart people with good ideas receive millions of dollars to build something. If that something generates billions of dollars, it is a success. If it does not, it is a failure.

Such “failures” include: Twitter, Soundcloud, Vine, Reddit.

At varying times, each of these companies had the hallmarks of “success”millions of engaged users, venture capital money, a good brand. Now, Twitter is limping along, Soundcloud is in a death spiral, Vine is gone, and Reddit is still trying to figure things out.

They suffer from the same problem as the other community-driven websites on the internetthey just aren’t great at making money. This might be fine if not for the sad reality that these are some of the best things on the internet. These are the platforms that have fostered creativity, given birth to internet-native humor and music, and, with regard to Twitter, changed the world.

Not that you’d know it from the way Twitter is covered. Donald Trump’s favorite microblogging service announced that, yet again, user growth has stalled. Meanwhile, the company is having trouble making any real money from advertising, which in the growth-obsessed, free-by-default world of the internet remains the dominant model.

This is Twitter’s problem, but it’s also everyone’s problem. The internet, once a decentralized mess of weirdness, is now well on its way to being an oligopoly in which anything that’s not Facebook, Google, or Amazon can’t compete. It’s a situation that conjures up the famous scene from “Glenngarry Glen Ross” first prize is a Cadillac, second prize is steak knives, third prize is you’re fired.

By some measure, this is life. Call it late-stage capitalism or natural selection. The strong eating the week isn’t new, it’s just more efficient on the internet. The optimists about the situation see this as creative destruction that pushes forward humanity.

That all sounds good but it’s hard to square with what’s happening to the most creative and impactful platforms on the internet. Tumblr, a bastion of internet community if there ever was one, was so hard to monetize that Yahoo ended up declaring $700 million in loses related to its acquisition.

Tumblr’s struggles are matched only by Soundcloud’s ongoing implosion. Once a bright spot in the internet’s otherwise dark history with music, the platform took a turn once it tried to start making money.

Maybe it’ll survive, with a little help from Chance the Rapper, who blew up on Soundcloud.

Even Google has had trouble with this. YouTube is arguably the best creator-driven platform on the internet, yet even Googlemaybe the best company in the world at selling adshas struggled to really make it work. YouTube has been pushing into high-end content, subscriptions, and even a TV bundle.

Reddit is probably the most engaged community in the history of the internet. And nobody can figure out how to make money without ruining it.

Then there’s Vine. RIP. Its creative class still resonates through the internet. In its heyday, no platform fostered a more ridiculous and original scene.

The grandaddy of them all is Wikipedia, still the internet’s crowning achievement. Its community-based information aggregation stands out as an accomplishment for humanity, arguably one of the wonders of the worldand it makes no money.

That’s the key here. Wikipedia is and has always been a nonprofit. From its start, there was never any sort of bend toward figuring out how to make money. Certainly Wikipedia needs some money to remain in operation, which is raised by the Wikimedia Foundation

Of course, Wikipedia could have been monetized. Its cofounder Jimmy Wales still gets asked why he didn’t. Who knows what it would look like if he had. We should all be thankful that he didn’t.

The dark side of this issue is, of course, that people are terrible. Twitter and Reddit and all of these platforms have plenty of value, but they’re also rife with the ugliest parts of humanity. This is part of the reasons they are terrible at making money. Advertisers quite understandably don’t want their valuable brands next to hate speech.

And advertisers dictate much of what is and is not a success on the internet. Ads remain the dominant form of business on the internet, though subscriptions are gaining ground. Facebook and Google dominate this ad market, and the scraps they leave behind aren’t terribly appealing.

“Upon further reflection, its clear that the broken system is ad-driven media on the internet. It simply doesnt serve people. In fact, its not designed to,” wrote Ev Williams, cofounder of Twitter and Medium, in a post announcing layoffs at Medium.

Williams has long been an advocate that quality and depth on the internet will win out. He may still be proven right, but for now, Medium has been forced to pivot toward a subscription model.

There’s some reasons to hope. The growth in donation-based programsmost notably Patreonpoints to a future in which the internet might be able to eschew the trappings of big money and big profits. Other platforms have begun to see success with similar programs, most notably Reddit with its Gold.

Maybe this is the start of the internet’s answer to the question of how it can create sustainable platforms that exist to serve communities rather than provide the same services as before. Facebook is well on its way to becoming TV (despite recent talk about community). Amazon sells us stuff. Netflix is, again, more TV. They’re great, but they’re just a better version of what we had before.

If that’s all the internet is to be, well then that’s very sad. There’s been a ton of great things on the internet, and people are just getting started. What’s going to matter going forward is that it doesn’t devolve into a giant pyramid scheme. Money is important, but it can’t be everything.

And until a better way comes along (if it ever does), the best things on the internet are going to suck at making money. Turns out it’s a feature, not a bug.

Jeff Bezos just leapfrogged Bill Gates to become the richest human on Earth…for about 6 hours

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2v4qSX6

Update Thursday, July 27 4:30 p.m. EST:

Jeff Bezos’ claim to the title proved short-lived Thursday afternoon when an earnings miss dragged Amazon’s stock down.

As of market closing time, Bloomberg’s billionaire wealth index had Bill Gates back on top with Bezos down to $89.8 billion from $90.6 billion earlier in the day.

We’ll be sure to update this space again if Gates happens to announce any surprise charity mega-pledges tonight.

Original story:

In 1998, The New York Times wrote a little story called, “Amazon.com is Expanding Beyond Books.” Nearly two decades later, the founder of that company has more money than anyone else on the planet.

Jeff Bezos passed Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates as the richest human on Earth on Thursday morning after Amazon’s stock jumped just high enough, according to Bloomberg.

Gates has been on top of the cash world for a little more than four years, and there’s a chance he could quickly regain that spot if Amazon’s soon-to-come quarterly earnings report don’t go well for whatever reason.

Both tech gurus have a net worth of around $90 billion, more money than the GDPs of, for example, Ethiopia and Sri Lanka.

Bezos got to the top as his company has continued to expand to the point that it’s now hard to define. Amazon still sells books, but it also sells just about everything else, in addition to providing cloud computing and recently buying Whole Foods.

All hail Bezos, champion of capitalism.

Uber driver allegedly engages in sex act after picking up passenger

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2tE9ncv

Image: Altaffer/AP/REX/Shutterstock

If you end up with an Uber driver engaged in a sex act, Uber will offer you $10 for your troubles.

That’s what happened to Aner Manuel, who posted a video that appeared to show his Uber driver engaged in sexual acts while operating a motor vehicle.

In a Facebook post, Aner Manuel claimed that his Uber driver picked him up and already had a woman in the passenger seat.

“As we pulled off the female in the front (who was clearly on drugs) attempted to open the door and could not even sit straight as the vehicle was in motion. She then began to grope him and grab him. They began to kiss and she began loosening his belt,” he wrote.

Manuel wrote that the intimate contact escalated, at which time he told the driver to pull over and let him out of the car.

“As we got further and further from my pickup location I had no idea where I was, so I had to stay in the car. She then proceeded to perform oral sex. This was my last straw. I asked the driver to drop me off,” Manuel wrote.

Manuel notified Uber, which gave him a refund and a $10 creditbut added that he’s not pleased with the company’s response.

“They have been extremely bad at answering any messages I’ve sent, and I demand something gets done. This is not okay” Manuel wrote.

The video is embedded below. A warning, it is relatively not safe for work.

Uber and Manuel did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In a statement to the Evening Standard, Uber said the driver had been removed from its service.

“The behaviour of this former driver is appalling and is not tolerated on the Uber app. As soon as this situation was reported to us, we immediately removed this drivers access,” the statement read.

LeBron James invested $1 million in a pizza startupand now he’s even richer

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2uZRHey

It’s good to be the king.

NBA superstar LeBron James has already proven himself a savvy businessman. One of his most recent investments is just the pepperoni on his pizza.

James’s $1 million investment in restaurant startup Blaze Pizza is now worth $25 million, thanks to a recent round of funding, according to ESPN.

That number is set to rise by as much as $15 million thanks to some endorsement payments that are contingent on sales, ESPN added.

James has plenty of other high profile investments under his belt, including Beats by Dre, as well as his own media companies, SpringHill Entertainment and Uninterrupted.

James’s financial acumen has drawn praise from none other than Warren Buffett, widely considered one of the greatest investors in American history.

“Hes savvy. Hes smart about financial matters. Its amazing to me the maturity he exhibits,” Buffett said about James.

James had a net worth of $275 million as of 2016, according to analysis done by Forbes.

James is far from the only NBA player to have taken an interest in investing. New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony has his own venture fund, Melo7 Tech Partners, while Golden State Warriors forward Andre Iguodala has become a fixture in the tech community.

Plenty of retired players have also gotten into tech investing, but none quite as much as NBA legend Kobe Bryant. Bryant launched a $100 million tech fund in 2016.

Follow him on Twitter and you’ll end up getting a healthy dose of tech, and even an idea of where he’s putting his cash.

Jimmy Kimmel tweets a sweet update on 3-month-old son

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2uOEZPX

Image: YOUTUBE/JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE

Months after revealing his newborn son’s diagnosis with a serious heart condition, Jimmy Kimmel says that little Billy is “doing great.”

The Jimmy Kimmel Live host shared an extremely cute photo (that smile!) of the 3-month-old baby on Friday. He also encouraged fans to call their representatives and senators a particularly urgent request as Republicans continue to blather on about repealing the Affordable Care Act.

“Thx for the love & support,” Kimmel tweeted. “Please remind your Congresspeople that every kid deserves the care he got.”

The update comes after Kimmel dedicated a Jimmy Kimmel Live monologue to Billy in May, shortly after the child was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary artesia and underwent open-heart surgery.

“In layman’s terms,” Kimmel said at the time, “the pulmonary valve was completely blocked.”

He also called for Congress to prioritize care for people who have pre-existing conditions even if those patients don’t have the financial means to pay for care themselves.

“If your baby is about to die, it shouldn’t matter how much money you make,” Kimmel said. “This isn’t football. There are no teams. We are the team it’s the United States. Don’t let their partisan squabbles divide us.”

IKEA is working on an Apple ARKit furniture app, but this developer just beat them to the punch

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2uMZixv

Image: ASHER VOLLMER VIA TWITTER

The augmented reality app space is expected to explode this fall thanks to developers using Apple’s ARKit for iOS.

But one developer is moving faster than even some of the major brands linked to Apple’s AR platform, having just demonstrated an amazing AR app before IKEA got a chance to launch its own ARKit-powered app.

Asher Vollmer, one of the developers behind the popular mobile game Threes, took to Twitter on Friday to reveal his experiment with ARKit: a fully functioning AR app that lets you arrange furniture in the real world.

If you’ve already seen ARKit apps in action, this might sound like just another AR demo, but you have to watch the video to realize just how powerful the app is. In just under a minute, Vollmer populates an empty space while people are moving about in the background with realistic looking furniture, plants, and even a working fireplace.

The array of options on Vollmer’s app also allows him to change the size of a piece of furniture in line with real world dimensions, making this a perfect tool for decorators, realtors, and even architects.

Apple CEO Tim Cook and IKEA executive Michael Valdsgaard both recently touted the company’s effort to roll out an ARKit-powered app soon. But Vollmer beat them to the punch, with powerful results.

But because iOS 11, ARKit’s native environment, isn’t going officially pubic until the fall, many ARKit-created apps, including Vollmer’s, aren’t available to most users yet.

This is just the latest example of the developer enthusiasm around ARKit, with independent developers having already demonstrated apps that highlight Tesla and SpaceX in AR environments via the iPhone.

Anyone wondering if AR on the iPhone is viable as a practical tool beyond gaming, these examples are giving us all the proof we need to illustrate exactly what’s possible. Even better: the demos are only getting more impressive with each passing week.

UK drone users get new guidelines as officials try to rein in airport incidents, privacy violations

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2uNxGIi

Image: Christopher Furlong/Getty Images

Operating a drone in the UK just got a little tougher, and safer.

On Saturday, the UK government posted new rules governing the use of drones weighing over 250 grams (about half a pound), with input from the Department for Transport, the Civil Aviation Authority, and the Military Aviation Authority.

The guidelines state that drone users will have to register their devices and undergo safety awareness testing to ensure that they’re aware of UK security, privacy, and safety rules.

Part of the impetus for the new guidelines is linked to a recent study by the collective agencies that found that drones weighing nearly one pound (400 grams) might cause damage to the windshield of a helicopter, an airborne vehicle that frequently occupies the same low altitude space as many drones in large city areas.

“By registering drones, introducing safety awareness tests to educate users we can reduce the inadvertent breaching of airspace restrictions.”

“Like all technology, drones too can be misused,” said Aviation Minister Lord Callanan in a statement on the government’s website. “By registering drones, introducing safety awareness tests to educate users we can reduce the inadvertent breaching of airspace restrictions to protect the public.”

In addition to the new rules, drone users in the UK are also required to follow the country’s “drone code,” which calls for always keeping your drone in sight, below 400 feet, keeping a reasonable distance from people and property, and most importantly keeping your drone far away from airports.

Amateur drones flying dangerously close to airports while airplanes are in flight have become a matter for concern in recent years, with several near-misses recorded in the UK and other countries. As recently as three weeks ago, a drone caused disruptions at Gatwick Airport, leading to flights from British Airways and EasyJet being diverted. And in November of 2016, an Airbus A320 plane approaching Heathrow airport reported seeing a drone at 10,000 feet just 98 feet away from the aircraft.

Whether the new drone rules will help in such cases remains to be seen, but UK officials are trying to make the new process easier by working on creating an easy to use website and app for drone registration.

Sprint ruthlessly trolls Verizon’s prices with a fake pop-up shop

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2vwlN7j

Image: sprint/business wire

Things are getting ugly in the battle of the wireless carriers.

In its latest shot at competitor Verizon, Sprint decided to open up a unique pop-up shop in Queens called “Twice the Price,” which essentially trolls Verizon’s prices by overcharging for all of the featured items.

Sprint explained in a press release that at “Twice the Price” shoppers can find items like “potato chips, party supplies, boogie boards, makeup mirrors, mops, bottles of water, and more” for twice their regular price. Because, as the store’s tagline goes, “Why pay less when you can pay more?”

The store is conveniently located directly next to a Verizon store, which makes the fact that Sprint used the same font and colors as the classic red and white Verizon logo that much more awkward.

“People ask me how I came up with this genius idea and I told them, ‘If Verizon can charge customers twice as much for four lines of Unlimited, why cant I?” said “Uncle Danny,” the store’s owner and president, in the release. “Did I copy Verizon? No, I was just inspired by their over-the-top pricing and the billions of dollars theyve made. I wanted to give customers a similar experience in my store. Well sell anything for twice the price!”

So. Much. Trolling.

The mock pop-up shop will only be around for July 21, and no items actually available for purchase, but you can still watch the full cringeworthy, shade-filled commercial here:

Your move, Verizon.

Snapchat cares about securitywhether it’s keeping CEO Evan Spiegel’s yacht adventures private or its software free from vulnerabilities. They, of course, would also not like to see any of their code ripped off by competitors such as Facebook.

Bloomberg connected some dots in a story Friday, highlighting moves that Snap Inc. has made in taking cybersecurity more seriously.

Notably, Snap Inc. snatched up Strong.Codes, a Swiss startup that specializes in protecting software code from being reverse engineered, a.k.a. copied.

The acquisition, according to Bloomberg, began with Snap hiring Laurent Balmelli, a cofounder, of Strong.Codes early this year. Later, the fellow three employees joined Snap, and Strong.Codes has since stopped operating separately, Mashable confirmed.

Snap declined to comment on the acquisition.

Snap is facing the wrath of investors with its stock falling from a high of $27 to below $15 as of Friday. One of the biggest concerns shouted across boardrooms is Facebook incessantly copying what Snapchat has done.

Snapchat’s once unique “Stories”a mobile-optimized way to share photos and videosis now available across Facebook’s family of apps. Snapchat’s once unique lenses (augmented reality experiences) are also available on Facebook and other apps. Snapchat offers original content from media outlets (Mashable is a Discover partner), but Facebook also plans to release new exclusive video series this year.

Snapchat and Facebook are in a competition for people’s attention, for sure. So what’s the smaller player to do? Hiring a team of software security experts may help, but Facebook/Instagram copying Snapchat isn’t as simple as ripping off source code. Facebook is staffed with thousands of engineers, an army much more powerful than Snapchat when it comes to fast acquisition of software products.

The potential of Facebook continuing to copy Snapchat is inevitable, and Snap Inc. is smart to keep hiring talent. Engineers at Strong.Codes can bring knowledge of cryptography and security as well as help expand their presence in Switzerland.

Netflix and 100 mil.

The entertainment giant revealed on Monday that it now boasts 104 million subscribers.

It’s a milestone that highlights just how big Netflix has grown in the past few years. Much of the growth has come from outside of the U.S., as the company noted.

“We also crossed the symbolic milestones of 100m members and more international than domestic members. It was a good quarter,” Netflix said in its investor letter.

Netflix continues to resemble an unstoppable force of nature that is impressive even when listed alongside rivals like Facebook and Google. Only Amazon rivals Netflix in terms of the number of people it has convinced to pay for its service on a monthly basis.

Reebok’s elaborate subtweet at Donald Trump has Twitter users talking

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2t5mcvT

Reebok wants in on the Trump Twitter trolling game and it’s showing absolutely no mercy.

On Friday, the athletic apparel company took a shot at the U.S. President by crafting a graphic that mocked the “compliments” he delivered to French President Emmanuel Macrons wife last week.

In a moment captured on Facebook Live during Trump’s visit to Paris, he can be seen giving French first lady Brigitte, a once-over before saying, “You know, you’re in such great shape … beautiful.”

*cringe*

In response to the cringeworthy interaction, Reebok posted an elaborate subtweet in the form of a handy chart created to help people determine when it’s appropriate to utter the words Trump spoke to Macron’s wife.

According to Reebok, really the only scenario Trump’s words could ever be considered okay is if you’re saying them while admiring a decades-old action figure from your childhood that survived a long hibernation in your parents’ basement.

Otherwise, maybe just try to keep them to yourself.

The company’s unexpected political message sparked quite the reaction online, and many surprised Twitter users began praising the subtweet.

When asked about the tweet, a Reebok spokesperson told Mashable, “Reebok believes that we should all strive to Be More Human in our lives: to push and challenge our boundaries physically, mentally and socially. That also means supporting one another in all of those ways.”

“It seems there is still a lot of confusion about how to do that, and perhaps this little reminder will help,” the spokesperson added.

Which brand will take on Trump next? Only time will tell.

Mashable reached out to Reebok for additional comment.

ScHoolboy Q calls out United for sending his dog to the wrong city

2017 has been ruff for United Airlines and things don’t seem to be improving.

The latest in a string of very bad incidents at the hands of the airline occurred on Friday after Quincy Matthew Hanley a rapper whom you likely know as ScHoolboy Q and his dog were placed on separate flights after a layover in Denver.

On Friday night after realizing he and his pet had been separated, the rapper shared his concern on Twitter, calling the airline out for putting his dog, Yeeerndamean, on the wrong flight and demanding answers.

As CNN reports, the rapper and his dog were traveling from Missouri to Burbank, California earlier that day. Things were going smoothly until their layover in Denver when the airline accidentally switched Yeeerndamean with another dog.

As a result, when the rapper landed in California he discovered he was left with someone else’s pet while his own dog had been sent on a flight to Chicago.

“My little dog been moving around since the A.M., prolly has pee and number 2 all in his cage smh,” Hanley told CNN. “….I plan on suing.”

In a statement to CNN, United apologized for the mishap and said the dog is being cared for:

“We’re working as quickly as possible to reunite the pet with their owner later this evening. We have reached out to our customer and sincerely apologize for this mistake and are providing a refund. Pets are part of our customers’ family, and their safety and wellbeing is of the upmost importance to us.”

On Saturday morning a United spokesperson told Mashable, “The customers dog has been safely reunited with their owner. We sincerely apologize for this mistake and are providing a refund.”

The airline has already come under fire this year for banning leggings, a high number of in-flight animal deaths, the violent removal a passenger from an overbooked flight, and a June lawsuit that revealed two-year-old footage of an employee pushing a 71-year-old passenger to the floor. Recently, United also gave a two-year-old’s seat to a standby passenger, forcing his mother to carry him for the duration of the flight.

Please, United just be better.
