Donald Trump tweets about the Las Vegas shooting with ‘warmest condolences’

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2xTGnUd

The U.S. is waking up to the terrible news of the Las Vegas shooting at a country music festival, which left at least 50 dead and 200 injured.

President Trump is an early starter and immediately tweeted his ‘warmest’ condolences:

The mass shooting, which took place at the Route 91 Harvest Festival near the Mandalay Bay, is already the deadliest in the U.S. history according to The Associated Press

The suspected gunman, who was named by police as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, from Vegas, was found dead by police on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel, according to Clark County sheriff Joe Lombardo.

Finally, an ad for sanitary products that features an actual period.

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2l0FJyh

Sanitary towel and tampon ads don’t exactly portray periods in the most realistic way. If it’s not strange-looking blue liquid being poured on pads, it’s women jumping around splashing each other for reasons that remain unknown to us.

Bodyform’s latest ad shows something refreshingly different. An actual period.

The ad opens with red liquid being poured onto a pad. Not a drop of blue dye in sight! It also shows a closeup of a woman’s thighs in a shower, with menstrual blood trickling down the inside of her leg—a sight that’s familiar to anyone who has periods.

The ad is part of Bodyform’s new #bloodnormal campaign, which aims to bring “blood out of the dark, onto our screens and into the conversation” in a bid to end period taboos. As part of the campaign, Bodyform surveyed over 10K men and women and found that 74 percent wanted “more realistic representation of periods” in ads.

About bloody time!

Trump says he met the ‘president of the Virgin Islands,’ a.k.a. himself

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2xScSCf

President Donald Trump has a way with words, as you may know.

Trump was speaking at Values Voter Summit on Friday when once again, he embarrassed himself with his choice of words.

While speaking on the natural disasters that have struck the United States in the last few months, Trump accidentally said he met with the president of the Virgins Islands. The problem? Trump is literally the president of the Virgin Islands, a U.S. territory.

Even the official White House transcript of the speech points out the error, noting that Trump was likely speaking about his meeting with Kenneth Mapp on October 3, the governor of the islands.

“I will tell you, I left Texas, and I left Florida, and I left Louisiana, and I went to Puerto Rico, and I met with the president [governor] of the Virgin Islands,” the transcript reads.

As always, the internet used the gaff as an opportunity to mock Trump.

The Nicolastick is a corn puff snack with Nicolas Cage’s face on the packaging

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2yufFB6

Nicolas Cage has become the “Nicolastick” in Japan, thanks to some creative marketing.

Ahead of December’s release of his 2016 movie, Army of One, in Japanese cinemas, some theatres are offering a limited edition Nicolas Cage corn puff snack that only comes with an advance ticket purchase.

Army of One is only coming out in the Asian country a year after its U.S. debut, and its Japanese title translates more accurately to “Bin Laden is My Prey.”

The cylindrical corn puff snack, called Umaibo, is commonly and cheaply available in Japan, where it typically retails for just 10 yen ($0.08).

Still, marketers thought it was clearly an edge putting Cage’s face on the packaging, given that people in Japan recognise him, after a string of weird Pachinko ads he did in the mid-2000s.

Pachinko is a Japanese pinball-style gambling game, which continues to achieve national levels of obsession.

Cage’s commercials captured some of that pachinko mania, with the Hollywood actor hallucinating about its slot machines, and singing a piano ditty in tribute to it.

All together now, pachinkoooo, pachinkooooo

Family discovers their dog survived deadly wildfire, was waiting for them to return

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2gjFsBh

A family was elated to discover that their Bernese Mountain Dog, Izzy, somehow managed to survive the wildfires that have ravaged areas of California.

Jack Weaver and his brother-in-law Patrick Widen hiked miles to Weaver’s mother’s home in Santa Rosa earlier this week. Despite being turned away by police, the men managed to make their way to the property for an important mission.

Although most valuables had been destroyed in the wildfire that ripped through the city, the men returned to the burned down home to retrieve the body of the family dog, which was presumed dead, the Associated Press reports.

But when the men arrived on the scene, Izzy was there waiting for them to return, tail wagging as they approached.

“The anticipation is killing me,” Jack can be heard saying in a clip, later uploaded to Facebook by Beckyjean Widen, Jack’s sister. The men start to desperately call for Izzy, clapping and whistling. Finally, one of the men spots the dog, and the two immediately break down.

“Izzy’s here! Izzy! Izzy, come here, baby!” Jack says as the very good dog happily approaches.

According to the post from Beckyjean Widen, her parents were forced to evacuate in the middle of the night, and in all the chaos, Izzy ran away. Their mother, Kathy Weaver, was obviously upset they were forced to leave the family dog.

“They lost everything, but my mom was most devastated about leaving Izzy,” Beckjean wrote.

“She went from being devastated about losing her home to the being the happiest person I’ve ever seen. I couldn’t get home fast enough. She was really, really happy … She’s still shaken up by the whole thing, but she’s in much better spirits now that Izzy is at our house,” Jack told the Associated Press.

A vet check revealed that 9-year-old Izzy was unharmed in the fire, which is miraculous considering the destruction the fires have caused.

The Tubbs fire burned over 35,000 acres in Santa Rose, and is only 60 percent contained as of Sunday, according to California firefighters. Overall, the multiple fires that started first on Oct. 8 are responsible for the deaths of at least 40 people, making it the deadliest wildfire outbreak in the state’s history.

Donald Trump Jr. and Jimmy Kimmel got in a bit of a Twitter squabble this weekend and it’s no surprise who won

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2xNRNUJ

Image: WIN MCNAMEE;EMMA MCINTYRE/GETTY IMAGES

Donald Trump and Donald Trump Jr. had nothing better to do than come for Jimmy Kimmel this weekend, 140 characters at a time. It backfired spectacularly.

Kimmel called for Trump to quit on Sunday morning after the president tweeted his displeasure with late night hosts who he believes are “dealing with the Democrats” due to their anti-Trump material. Trump Jr. took it upon himself to chime in on Twitter too.

Trump Jr.’s response to Kimmel was a pivot to Harvey Weinstein, the producer who was fired from The Weinstein Company after sexual harassment claims arose last week in a New York Times exposé.

“You mean that big story from the failing, liberal, one-sided New York Times?,” Kimmel responded, referencing Trump’s false remarks this summer about the status of the newspaper. “I think it is disgusting.”

To which Trump Jr. only had this to say: “Great I look forward to your monologues next week. You’re probably due for a change if only for a moment or two.”

“Great,” Kimmel responded. “In the meantime, enjoy this!,” he wrote, attaching the infamous Access Hollywood video of the president and Billy Bush, in which Trump speaks lewdly about women.

Trump Jr. has yet to respond to that particular tweet, but he should probably keep his eyes and ears open for whatever Kimmel has in store for this week’s monologues. Judging by his recent ones, he will most definitely have something important to say.

Yahoo now says all 3 billion of its accounts affected by massive hack

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2zybVfC

Image: justin sullivan/Getty Images

Yahoo revealed Tuesday that a massive cyberattack it suffered in 2013 was much more widespread than it previously said, according to regulatory filings.

The web portal now says all 3 billion Yahoo accounts were compromised in the breach. The company initially said only 1 billion had been hit when it first disclosed the hack last December.

That means that absolutely everyone who had a Yahoo account when the theft occurred in August 2013 was affected.

Yahoo’s new Verizon-owned parent company, Oath, said the updated figure was reached after “new intelligence” was obtained and investigated with help from outside forensic experts.

“Verizon is committed to the highest standards of accountability and transparency, and we proactively work to ensure the safety and security of our users and networks in an evolving landscape of online threats,” Chandra McMahon, Verizon’s chief information security officer, said in a press release. “Our investment in Yahoo is allowing that team to continue to take significant steps to enhance their security, as well as benefit from Verizon’s experience and resources.”

Oath said it would begin notifying the additional 2 billion users who weren’t included in the last investigation over the course of the next several days.

The compromised information includes usernames, telephone numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords (using MD5) and, in some cases, encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers, an Oath spokesperson said on the company’s website. Payment card data and bank account information, however, were not part of the leak, the new investigation confirmed.

The development is most damaging yet in a series of embarrassing cybersecurity episodes the aging former tech titan has exposed in the past year.

The original disclosure of the hack nearly derailed Yahoo’s then-pending blockbuster sale to Verizon that closed earlier this year. The carrier ultimately managed to knock $350 million off the agreed-upon price instead.

Yahoo also announced a separate late-2014 cyberattack last fall that it believed to be the work of  a “state-sponsored actor.” The company said the incidents were not related.

Yahoo advises affected users to change their passwords and security questions, check their accounts for suspicious activities, and avoid clicking on shady emails. You can find more information on precautionary measures here.

Grateful Dead legend Bob Weir reveals his key to good vibes

The Season 3 finale might be hours away, but an even bigger day is still ahead for Rick & Morty fans.

On Oct. 7, for one day only, McDonald’s will let all comers sample a bit of that sweet, sweet Szechuan sauce. The Holy Grail of Mickey D’s condiments was a punchline way back in April, when Rick & Morty‘s Season 3 premiere streamed for just 48 hours, starting on April Fool’s Day.

A few months later when Season 3 kicked off in earnest, McDonald’s held a contest that concluded with three lucky fans getting their own bottles of Szechuan sauce. One in particular made headlines when he sold his loot to Deadmau5 — interrupting the DJ’s wedding weekend in the process.

The IRL history of McDonald’s Szechuan sauce dates back to the late ’90s, when Disney’s Mulan released. The fast food franchise offered a tie-in deal that packed Szechuan dipping sauce in with Chicken McNugget Happy Meals.

Only select McDonald’s locations will have the Szechuan sauce on Oct. 7. You can look to see if there’s one near you on this website, and if you’re — I’m sorry for the bad pun, blame McDonald’s — obsauced enough to chase it.

Woman with dog allergy refuses to get off plane, so cops push her off

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2ynHlrd

Another plane booting video is gaining traction online months after the violent United incident

A woman was forcibly removed from a Southwest flight Tuesday, but this time around the passenger is getting very little sympathy online.

The woman, identified as 46-year-old Anila Daulatzai from Baltimore, had complained about two dogs on her flight from Baltimore-Washington International Airport to Los Angeles. She said she was deathly allergic, but when crew informed her they couldn’t remove the dogs, one of which was a service dog, she was told to leave the plane.

That’s when things went south. After the woman couldn’t show medical papers about her allergies and refused to leave the plane, law enforcement arrived to remove her, Southwest said in a statement. She’s since been charged with disorderly conduct, failure to obey a reasonable and lawful order, disturbing the peace, obstructing and hindering a police officer and resisting arrest, but released by authorities, according to KTLA.

A low-quality video recorded by another passenger shows the woman struggling on Flight 1525 with officers down the aisle of the plane. The video is embedded at the top of this story.

At one point she tells the officers her father has a surgery scheduled and to not touch her, while one of the officers grabs her from behind and shouts. Other passengers urge her to walk off the plane on her own. When an officer grabs her, she yells, “Don’t touch me!” He loudly demands “Walk!”as a response.

“Geez, lady just get off the plane,” another passenger says as she’s pushed down the aisle. More chatter can be heard about how she said she had allergies.

The comments caught on tape are similar to the response online. Many seem to think the woman brought her troubles upon herself and she could have handled the situation better. It also doesn’t help that she wanted the dogs removed from the flight so that she could fly. To be fair, the officer grabbing her isn’t winning points either.

“If you look at the police, they were being overly aggressive,” Bill Dumas, the passenger who recorded the incident, told CBS. “Really, she wasn’t giving them much of a choice, and the people on the plane were saying, ‘Just get off the plane,'” he said.

Southwest also acknowledged the use of force in a statement and said it was unfortunate officers resorted to forcing her off the plane. “We are disheartened by the way this situation unfolded,” Southwest said.

Public records show Daulatzai was arrested in 2006 for an unspecified misdemeanor citizen arrest through the Los Angeles Police Department.

In the video, she can be heard telling the officers, “I’m a professor, what are you doing.” She’s listed as a new faculty member at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She was previously a visiting assistant professor of Women’s Studies and Islamic Studies at the Harvard Divinity School.

The airline also apologized to Daulatzai. But Twitter isn’t commiserating.

Tree burning from the inside looks like a portal to hell

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2ztqBMJ

Matthew McDermott of Sonoma, California discovered an odd scene while driving in Schellville, California on Monday. A tree had caught fire thanks to the wildfires ripping through the state, and the tree was burning from the inside out.

“That is the craziest fucking thing I’ve ever seen,” McDermott could be heard saying in the clip. “It’s hollowed out the tree.”

The outside of the tree seems mostly intact, and the fire burning inside can be seen through a series of holes in its trunk. It looks like a portal to hell.

The Tubbs fire that caused the tree to ignite spread across 28,000 acres and destroyed over 500 homes, according to California firefighters. As of Friday, the fire was 25 percent contained.

Others spotted similar occurrences, however, the tree McDermott was a little bit more impressive.

Pitbull lends his private plane to help cancer patients in Puerto Rico get treatment they need

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2gECfge

They don’t call him Mr. Worldwide for nothing.

Pitbull is sending his private plane to Puerto Rico for cancer patients to be brought into the mainland United States for treatment. The U.S. territory is still in dire straits from Hurricane Maria, which has left the entire island without power and upwards of 60 percent of the population without access to potable water. Generators are being distributed to hospitals, but there’s no telling how long it’ll be used for.

Puerto Rico congresswoman Jenniffer Gonzalez (@Jenniffer2012) thanked Pitbull for his generosity on Twitter.

“Thank you @pitbull for lending your private plane to move cancer patients from PR to USA so that they can get chemo,” she wrote in Spanish.

The rapper responded about his efforts and told the The New York Daily News on Tuesday, “Thank God we’re blessed to help. Just doing my part.”

It’s not the first time Pitbull has lent a helping hand to those in need. Back in 2013, he opened up the Sports and Leadership Management (SLAM) charter schools in Miami and throughout South Florida, most recently Tampa, in partnership with the non-profit Mater Academy

Kudos to Pitbull and other celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Daddy Yankee and Lin-Manuel Miranda for providing resources to aid this humanitarian crisis.

AIM will officially sign-off forever in December

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2xEtwjJ

Image: Liz Pierson / mashable composite

AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), the beloved messaging service that was the first online experience for an entire generation, will finally reach the end of its life later this year.

The remnants of the once popular chat service will be taken off life support (i.e. AOL parent company Oath will discontinue support) on Dec. 15. So if you’re still using AIM to chat with your friends and make plans to meet up at the local mall, you’d better start looking for an alternative chat service.

AOL pushed out an email about the instant messenger’s demise this morning, so if you still have access to an account, you should check your inbox for this sad message:

The news is sure to be heart-wrenching for millennials who spent hours on end messaging with friends, tying up their parents’ phone lines on dial-up connections. But AIM has fallen out of favor in recent years, as we’ve migrated to newer, flashier services on our smartphones like SnapChat, Facebook Messenger, and WhatsApp.

Come December 15, all that will be left are memories of unfortunate screen names (remember Swimfan?) and odes to a simpler time online. Take a moment today to pay your respects, and set an appropriately sappy Dashboard Confessional away message in tribute.

Apple may be close to finding the source of that epic iOS 11 leak

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2y3nzkt

We’re now accustomed to a minor hardware and software leaks in the weeks and months ahead of any major Apple event, but Saturday’s massive Golden Master version iOS 11 leak may be the worst ever suffered by the incredibly secretive company.

Like, ever.

So now, just a couple of days away from Apple’s big iPhone event, we await the inevitable leak blowback, and it’s already begun: We now have new details on how the leaks may have made it to the public.

That leak exposed a wide range of details ahead of Apple’s Tuesday event, including the names of the new iPhones, a new LTE Apple Watch, the name of Face ID and how it works, and a number of software goodies that would have otherwise wowed the audience in a couple of days.

Now? Assuming all the information from the leak pans out, it’s difficult to imagine many surprises from Tim Cook when he hits the stage in about 48 hours. And you can bet Cook isn’t happy about that.

Following the leak, Apple-focused podcaster and blogger John Gruber, who occasionally delivers insider details on the company’s products, explained how the leak information was likely obtained. And rather than pinning the leak on a hacker, he points the spotlight in a very surprising direction.

“I can state with nearly 100 percent certainty that it was [leaked by an Apple employee]”

“As best I’ve been able to ascertain, these builds were available to download by anyone, but they were obscured by long, unguessable URLs,” wrote Gruber. “Someone within Apple leaked the list of URLs to 9to5Mac and MacRumors. I’m nearly certain this wasn’t a mistake, but rather a deliberate malicious act by a rogue Apple employee.”

Then on Sunday, the BBC reported that it had confirmed that an “anonymous source” had deliberately sent the leak information to 9to5Mac and MacRumors, allowing the publications to download the software “from Apple’s own computer servers.”

Gruber followed up on that report on Sunday by adding more intrigue to any questions around the leak’s origin.

“The BBC doesn’t say definitively that the leak was sent by an Apple employee, but I can state with nearly 100 percent certainty that it was,” wrote Gruber. “I also think there’s a good chance Apple is going to figure out who it was.”

That might sound ominous, but Apple has long been known for the lengths to which it will go to ensure the secrecy of its products, so Cook and his team are likely working overtime to track down the person who leaked the information, assuming that they haven’t already.

“That person should be ashamed of themselves,” wrote Gruber, “and should be very worried when their phone next rings.”

Apple’s new iPhones have fast charging, but it’s not free

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2wHtI25

The iPhone X supports fast charging. According to Apple’s official specs, it only takes 30 minutes to charge its battery up to 50%. Pretty neat, huh?

But there’s a problem, as noticed by Cnet: When you buy an iPhone X — or iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, which support the same feature — you don’t get fast charging out of the box.

The fine print regarding fast charging on Apple’s tech specs page for the iPhone X, 8 and 8 Plus, says the following: “Testing conducted by Apple in August 2017 using preproduction iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus units and software and accessory Apple USB-C Power Adapters (29W Model A1540, 61W Model A1718, 87W Model A1719).”

But the iPhone X, 8 and 8 Plus don’t come with USB-C Power Adapters. They come, according to Apple’s tech specs, with a “USB Power Adapter” which likely means USB-A. So users will have to buy a separate adapter, and the cheapest USB-C Power Adapter Apple is selling — the 29W model — costs $49 in Apple Store.

Worse, you’ll need a new cable, too. The new iPhones come with a “Lightning to USB Cable” adapter, but you’ll need Apple’s “USB-C to Lightning Cable” adapter, which starts from $25 in the Apple Store.

You can probably get a better deal with third-party accessories, but even then, the fact that an important new feature on the new iPhones doesn’t work out of the box (without a separate purchase) is tough to swallow.

We’ve asked Apple for comment and will update the story when we hear from them.

Equifax is already facing a major class-action lawsuit for its massive data breach

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2ySbyeH

Image: AP/REX/Shutterstock

That didn’t take long.

Two Oregon women filed a class action lawsuit against Equifax Thursday evening, just hours after the credit reporting agency revealed a massive data breach that may have compromised personal information belonging to 143 million Americans.

The complaint accuses Equifax of negligence in protecting consumer data, arguing the company chose to skimp on costs rather than take adequate technical measures that might have thwarted hackers.

“Equifax knew and should have known that failure to maintain adequate technological safeguards would eventually result in a massive data breach,” the document alleges. “Equifax could have and should have substantially increased the amount of money it spent to protect against cyber-attacks but chose not to.”

The lawsuit seeks compensation of up to $70 billion for all consumers affected as well as a court order requiring the company to preserve all internal records related to the attack. It was filed on behalf of plaintiffs Mary McHill and Brook Reinhard in a federal court in Portland, Oregon.

The Securities and Exchange Commission also announced Friday that it is opening an investigation into the breach.

Equifax said in a statement on Thursday that the hack took place between mid-May and July 29 when the company discovered it and shut it down. The company then hired a cybersecurity firm to investigate and contacted law enforcement before disclosing it to the public this week.

Days after the attack was identified, three Equifax execs unloaded nearly $2 million in company stock. A company spokesperson denied that the execs had any knowledge of the breach at the time.

The lawyers behind the suit said they are hoping it will be a “teachable moment” for better data security.

“Ms. McHill and Mr. Reinhard hope Equifax will use this massive data breach, and their subsequent lawsuit, as a teachable moment to finally adopt adequate safeguards to protect against this type of cyberattack in the future,” the document says.

97-year-old war veteran takes a knee in response to President Trump’s protest comments

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2g3z9VI

There’s never an age limit when it comes to fighting for what you believe in.

Brennan Gilmore tweeted a photo Sunday of his 97-year-old grandfather, John Middlemas, kneeling in support of the #TakeAKnee movement, started by former San Francisco 49ers football player Colin Kaepernick in 2016 over police violence against African Americans.

President Donald Trump’s outspoken criticism against athletes who don’t stand up for the national anthem sparked this protest among people like Middlemas in solidarity with NFL athletes who kneeled on the field this weekend.

“My grandpa is a 97-year-old WWII vet and Missouri farmer who wanted to join with those who #TakeAKnee,” Gilmore tweeted. The World War II veteran told Gilmore, those kids have every right to protest.

The fight against injustice isn’t new for the war vet. In a following tweet Gilmore stated his grandfather was an ally in the civil rights movement and “an amazing man always on the side of justice.”

He even shared a few old photos of his grandfather in the Navy and as a farmer.

This viral image sparked tweets from veterans and users alike, praising the war veteran on his stand against the issue and thanking him for his service. The tweet has garnered over 140,000 likes.

It goes to show a true example of what actually makes America great.

Dude smoking a cigarette at a gas station gets a rude awakening

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2gmGe0u

If there’s anywhere you shouldn’t smoke, it’s at a gas station.

A dude enjoying a cigarette at his car at a gas station in Sofia, Bulgaria received a healthy dose of instant karma when he apparently refused to extinguish his butt when asked.

In the clip, the young man can be seen smoking next to his car and briefly arguing with someone off camera. Then, the gas station attendant slowly approaches the pump and calmly removes a fire extinguisher from its holder. Without warning, he then douses the man at the pump with foam.

The man’s car door was open during the dousing, so his interior was completely covered with foam. It was so bad that the passengers in the vehicle were forced to exit the car.

We’re gonna guess that he’ll never do that agin.

Also, check out the man calmly pumping gas at the pump directly next to the smoking man, acting as if there wasn’t a huge scene going down just a few feet away.

Unfortunate little boy swallows party horn, honks when he breathes

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2hYROD3

Oh dear. This poor little boy got a rather nasty surprise after accidentally inhaling a whistle from a party horn.

A video the 8-year-old unnamed boy from San Miguel de Tucuman in Argentina was posted by his doctor. It shows him honking every time he breaths in.

Doctor Santiago Gomez Zuviría posted the video to raise awareness about toy safety and the risks children are exposed to.

In the video, the poor little guy looks absolutely exasperated from the honking sound which he emits every time he breathes in. Who can blame him?

Thankfully, the whistle was safely removed and the boy no longer makes that sound.

PSA: Not to be tried at home.

Rivals could take over two years to catch up to the iPhone X, says expert

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2y8ymt8

The iPhone X‘s new TrueDepth camera system is rumored to be causing some production delays, but it could give Apple an important edge over its competitors for years to come.

Renown analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities said Apple’s competitors will likely need at least two and a half years to replicate the TrueDepth camera’s functionality and user experience in an investors note obtained by MacRumors. The system is the key to Apple’s new “Face ID” biometric security technology, Animoji, and several other new features.

Kuo’s bold predictions come shortly after he watched Apple’s official demonstrations of the camera system, which made him believe even more that the competition won’t be able to match it. He previously said that he thought rival phone makers would need one or two years to catch up.

Kuo’s new predictions about the competition come with slightly lower expectations for the iPhone X’s success in the short term. KGI revised its 2017 shipping estimates from 40 million to 30 to 35 million units — but the lower projection was due only to the continuing concerns about the X’s production, not demand. Kuo wrote that he has “full confidence” that the X will be a long-term success.

Apple stumbled slightly and the public shared a gleeful moment of schadenfreude when exec Craig Federighi struggled to demo FaceID onstage during the X’s coming out party, but the company claimed that the fail was actually the result of the system doing its job to require a passcode after too many unverified unlock attempts.

Once consumers have a chance to check out the TrueDepth for themselves, we’ll see if it can live up to all the hype. If Apple fans embrace the iPhone X’s facial tracking features and FaceID functionality like they did when Touch ID debuted with the iPhone 5S, competitors face the uphill task of developing their own spin on the tech to catch up.

‘Silicon Valley’ shows how ridiculous the new iPhone X truly is

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2yNNU2X

Sometimes, it takes the cast of Silicon Valley to poke fun at the real world Silicon Valley.

While the show masterfully ribs its own version of tech industry, a new cut from Funny or Die mashed scenes from Silicon Valley with Apple’s iPhone keynote to reveal the ridiculousness that is the IRL iPhone X.

Sure, the iPhone X is an impressive phone (it better be with that price tag), but the way Apple fans praise anything the company does is something we should all call out and laugh at. While cool, Animoji is not the breakthrough technology we need (or want) right now.

After Trump’s visit to Puerto Rico, Mayor of San Juan wears a ‘NASTY’ T-shirt in a TV interview

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2koEto0

Whoever is responsible for the Mayor of San Juan’s T-shirt collection, we’d like to take this time to thank you.

Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, not one to mince her words or protest T-shirts, wore a black T-shirt emblazoned with the words “NASTY” on it to a Univision interview Wednesday morning. Yulín Cruz’s T-shirt appears to have been in response to Trump’s tweets about her on Saturday, as well as his spectacularly tone deaf visit to the island yesterday.

Here’s what Yulín Cruz had to say of his time there:

“When someone is annoyed by someone claiming lack of drinking water, lack of medicine for the sick, and lack of food for the hungry, that person has problems too severe to be explained in an interview. What is really nasty is that anyone would turn their back on the Puerto Rican people,” Yulín Cruz told Univision.

From his golf club on Saturday, Trump tweeted: “The Mayor of San Juan, who was very complimentary only a few days ago, has now been told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump.

He later added: “Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help. They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort.”

After showing up in Puerto Rico yesterday to pitch paper towels at desperate people and humiliate everyone watching, the President then hopped back in his air conditioned plane to Nevada to do whatever the hell he did there.

Over the weekend, Yulín Cruz was spotted wearing a similarly designed T-shirt reading “We are dying.”

The death toll in Puerto Rico is 34, though it is expected to rise far higher

The #Deplorable Twitter community that supports Trump, already reeling from the NFL protests, shamed the mayor for not wearing more appropriate T-shirts on television — not the president, for you know, failing the Puerto Rican people.

NASTY women like Clinton and Yulín Cruz are fighting back, one block print T-shirt at a time.

‘Super Mario 64 Online’ is a wild fan project that Nintendo could learn from

via WordPress http://ift.tt/2yL1WCa

I bet it can back up your save files, too.

Super Mario 64 Online is a most epic fan creation. Using the beloved Nintendo 64 launch title as a foundation, this homemade project connects up to 24 players in their own online version of the Mushroom Kingdom.

It uses a ROM version of the N64 game, not the actual console and cartridge. That puts it in the same murky legal territory as other fan projects that modify old, pre-online games. But it also means Nintendo can’t shut it down as easily as, say, a fan-made Pokémon mod for Minecraft.

Once you get it running — a process that requires more technical knowhow than your average game install, it’s worth noting — you choose from a list of characters and hop in. In the videos released so far we can see Wario, Waluigi, Peach, Luigi, Yoshi, and a couple flavors of Toad.

None of those characters are playable in the original Super Mario 64 (no, not even Luigi), and most of them don’t appear in the game at all.

What’s neat about this mod is the way it doesn’t seem to change anything else. It’s literally just a 24-player online version of Super Mario 64. I guess you could team up with a bunch of friends and collaborate on beating the game, but why do that when there are so many other things to do?

Super Mario 64, with its highly varied worlds and shifting activities, seems to work very well as a make-your-own-fun kind of online sandbox. Sure, there’s no invisible referee awarding you points and crowning winners, but is any of that really necessary? (No, it’s not.)

Nintendo doesn’t have the greatest track record when it comes to its handling of fan-made projects, but let’s all hope the company takes a long look at what’s happening here. Mario 64 immediately feels like a natural fit for online play, and the unfocused nature of its assorted activities only adds to the appeal.

This cool mod won’t ever receive Nintendo’s blessing, but — given the popularity of the Switch and its online connectivity — it would be great to see the company’s creative-types lean in on social multiplayer experiences like this.

It might be fan-made, but something about the flow of Super Mario 64 Online feels inescapably Nintendo.
